Does lifting the Rav4 make it cool? Is the Rav4 in any trim cool? Yes and yes.

I like the current Rav-4 and I’m not entirely sure why.

I’ll never like modern styling, too many useless angles. I like the 2000s curvy styling...

Doesn’t do anything for me. It’s better with the rediculous tires and ride-height , but... Good lord. It’s like Toyota sprinkled on all of it’s stylistic *blandness*, and then decided to grab some from Honda and Nissan for good measure.

It gets a partial cool from me. I like the new Rav4 look and lifting any crossover is kinda fun.
For actual off-roading I do like the Trailhawk’s option of a rear axel lockers.

No, no, and no. One of the few new model s that I think are legitimately ugly.

It looks like a cross between a 4Runner and a Cherokee, maybe that’s why?

R eminds me of this somehow

the current rav4 isn’t bad. looks nice, you can fit real tires on it. not much cop in anything but bad weather and some muddy roads, but that takes you to a lot of really neat places. 2 of my more memorable trips could be done about 80-90% in something like this, and nothing critical.

That’s my internal debate.
The internal debate says turbo Outback for the same price is smarter, though.

I would take the lesser capability of the rav4 over the Subaru transmission and turbo woes in a heartbeat.

Yep, that’s 100% what it’s coming down to. I’ll likely test drive both in a few weeks.

I just went to Jeep’s site and built a Cherokee Trailhawk. $37.5K. Great googly moogly - even Cherokee’s are getting expensive. The Wrangler is closing in on $50K for a Rubicon. I guess it’s modern inflation, but man that’s a lot of dough for an FCA product.

Oz doesn’t get this specification.
Also...the only way to get a non hybrid AWD is to select the top grade Edge which is a AU$52,000 car. You’d almost get the 3.6L Outback for that... current deals on 2019 plated 2.5L powered Outback have them at AU$40k.
And if you do pick a hybrid AWD RAV4 it only comes with a CVT transmission.
Therefore, they might be OK for the city (except you should get a Corolla or Camry in this situation) but, out in the real world, nope.

I had a Rav4 as a rental a few months ago. It was one of the most boring, uninspiring things I have ever driven. Perfectly reliable appliance, but the Hyundai Accent hatchback rental I had before it was way more interesting.

It’s a modified model, so you could make it yourself.
Alas, the Outback is also cheaper here. I still might test drive it anyway.

I ‘could’ modify a RAV4. But, in my world, Toyota sell the base grade Fortuner GX for fifty grand driveway.

I would love that.

I’m coming around on those - at first I was “hmm... lots of angles... ” but now I’m “okay, that could work.” I am on the - I like this one better than the last couple side of things. Would definitely cross shop it against an Outback.

Oh yeah totally get that. I mean my eyes water at all crossovers this size, a similarly equipped RAV4 Adventure is knocking on 40k as well.
One thing I’ll note from working in marketing at an FCA dealer is that MSRP is always a bit inflated so they can advertise bigger rebates/discounts. Most of our 37k Trailhawks actually retail between 33-35.

You might...I personally wasn’t a fan. Bit narrow in the accommodation , bit too basic for the coin and a bit too underpowered. Pajero Sport is equally narrow but otherwise well sorted. Ford Everest is well sized, well equipped, grunty powerful but expensive.
However , the Isuzu MU-X is currently where the smart money is in this class . Where Isuzu and Mazda take it in the next iteration will be very interesting...

Isuzu MU-X LS-M 4x4 auto, 2019 plated. Currently, AU$47000 drive away with 6 year warranty, 6 years roadside assistance and $1,000 rebate on dealer accessories like a towbar or bullbar.
